In order for adoption to be legally possible, the child’s birth parents must voluntarily or involuntarily relinquish their rights to the child. Through adoption, you assume the rights and responsibilities of the parent. The child is placed in the custody of the new parents for a period of six months to one year before the adoption becomes final.
