Typically, there are two aspects of child custody: legal custody and physical custody. Legal custody involves decisions such as education and medical care, while physical custody defines where the child lives. In many cases, it is in the best interests of the child for parents to share legal custody, while in other cases it makes more sense for one parent to have the decision-making responsibility. Sometimes, it makes more sense for the child to live solely with one parent, while other times it is better if the child lives part-time at each parent’s house.
